Your first kiss as a married couple is one of the most iconic moments of your wedding day. It's the photograph that often ends up framed on the wall, shared across social media, and treasured for years to come.
But here's a little secret from behind the camera: the "perfect" first kiss rarely happens by accident.
As a wedding photographer, I've seen hundreds of ceremonies, and a few simple tips can make all the difference between a rushed peck and a beautiful, timeless image.
1. Slow Down
The biggest mistake couples make is rushing through the kiss.
After the celebrant announces you as newlyweds, take a second to soak it all in. Turn towards each other, smile, and enjoy the moment before leaning in.
A slow kiss gives your photographer time to capture multiple angles and genuine emotion.

2. Hold the Kiss for a Few Seconds
You don't need to make everyone uncomfortable, but holding your kiss for three to five seconds is ideal.
This gives enough time for a series of photographs rather than just one quick snap that might catch someone blinking.

3. Don't Be Afraid to Use Your Hands
One little trick that can make your first kiss photos look even more natural is to use your hands.
For brides, placing a hand gently on your partner's cheek, neck, or shoulder creates a beautiful connection and adds a touch of intimacy to the image. It also helps avoid that slightly awkward "arms by your sides" feeling.
And grooms—this one's especially for you. Not everyone feels completely comfortable being the centre of attention, and that's absolutely normal. Having your partner's hand on your face or wrapping an arm around each other often helps you both relax and gives you something natural to do, rather than wondering where your hands should go.
The best first kiss photos aren't about perfection—they're about connection. A gentle touch can turn a simple kiss into a photograph that feels authentic and full of emotion.

4. Don't Forget to Smile Afterwards
Some of our favourite images aren't actually the kiss—they're the moments immediately after.
The laughter, the excitement, and the look you give each other as you realise you're finally married often create the most authentic photographs of the entire day.

5. Walk Back Down the Aisle Together
After the kiss, take your time walking back down the aisle. Hold hands, look at each other, celebrate, and enjoy your guests cheering you on.
These candid moments are often just as memorable as the ceremony itself.

The best wedding
photographs aren't staged moments—they're real moments, simply given the space to happen.
